Have you ever noticed that your network was slower around midnight on December 31st? This isn't because of a problem with your phone or a bug in the app you are using. It’s because the network is saturated. We are all connected at the same time. Even if we might think that we are fully in the moment at midnight on New Year’s Eve, the number of calls, text messages and connections being exchanged at this hour clearly shows that we are not. Think about this, we’d rather be on our phones than spending quality time with the people around us!

We usually like to be surrounded by our friends or family for New Year’s Eve. And of course, there is always someone missing to whom you want to send a message, to wish them a Happy New Year. WhatsApp shared on Twitter that, on 31 December 2019, 100 billion messages were sent, setting set a new world record for messages sent on the app in one day.

The number of internet users around the globe is increasing rapidly, and we now use more electronic devices than ever before. Cisco, in its annual report, forecasts that there will be 5.3 billion internet users in 2023, a 3,5% growth since 2022, with 3.6 devices per capita in 2023 compared to 3.3 in 2022. All of which means more messages and more data usage. To avoid saturation, we are building cellular networks of antennas with better performance, and their number is increasing and will increase even more in the future allowing connectivity everywhere – at the highest speed.

But in improving network capability, we have created a whole new problem for ourselves. Adding more antennas leads to increased levels of Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMF), which significantly impact our lives. Stronger electromagnetic waves affect sleep, fertility and can raise the likelihood of heart and brain diseases. A higher level of EMF also increases the chances of security breaches. Indeed, governments raising awareness about cyber-attacks during end-of-year celebrations.

And finally, aside from not being fully in the moment of the New Year celebration sending messages immediately after midnight may make recipients feel obliged to answer immediately and reciprocate, rather than continuing to celebrate and be in the moment. Now more than ever, we should be rethinking the timing of our New Year messages. They can just as easily be sent during the day on the 1st, or even on the 2nd of January, when there is enough time to personalise them and make them more meaningful.

At FERRONATO, we believe this is how we should all start 2023 – disconnected from our devices and reconnected with the present and the people we love. Put your phone in its MetaFab® faraday sleeve and forget about it for a moment. Find the best option for you here.
